Private Residence

NCA was hired to redefine the main level of a Shingle Style home situated on the Portsmouth waterfront. The client wanted to replace the traditional New England décor with a sophisticated international aesthetic that accentuated the home’s views of Narragansett Bay. The client also wanted the interiors to provide a subtle backdrop for their extensive collection of newly purchased contemporary furnishings, carpets, paintings, and sculptures.

The design team met the challenge by reconfiguring the main floor plan to better accommodate the client’s entertaining needs. Sustainability, ergonomics, functionality, and exquisite attention–to–detail served as the guiding principles throughout the project. Many unique architectural elements distinguish the living spaces. For example, a front pivot hinge door fashioned from wenge wood and stainless-steel inserts was installed in the main entry. Large slabs of white marble were hand selected to create fireplace surrounds in the sitting rooms and dining room. The kitchen features state–of–the–art handle–less cabinetry crafted from pear wood and solid surface counter tops. A wine room was strategically positioned between the kitchen, formal dining room and sitting room for easy access. This utilitarian climate-controlled space evokes a sculptural quality and boasts glass walls with brushed channel and sliding glass doors.
